Jan eighth – February 13th 2022
Closing Reception: Saturday, Feb 12th, 5-8PM
Saturdays + Sundays i-6PM
Net is an exhibition that brings together two artists who use systems of repetition as a cohesive chemical element against chaos. Sarah McDougald Kohn and Lauren Collings practice experimentation to hover in the unwieldy realm of the organic. Both artists rein it in by incorporating repetition: whether information technology is bondage and braids or stripes and dots, the pattern acts like a net: containing the baggy field as parts poke out through the holes.

Throughout Fisher and Ainslie'southward bodies of piece of work, at that place are flickers of familiar forms--a crown of hair, the crests of waves, a bird's beak, a plastic jewel--that reference our shared manner of reading the earth. 'Unearth' takes on a double meaning: Fisher and Ainslie present viewers with something unearthed, every bit in excavated, but also un-earth, as in "not earth"--a vision of the natural earth altered through artifice and man design.

The half dozen artists presented in SPACES practice not adhere solely to the restrictions of contemporary painting fix by rigid representational and non-representational demands. Instead, they tend to shift betwixt figure, nature, and abstraction at volition. They each move betwixt - or rather their work exists- in that space between representation and abstraction.
At times these artists simultaneously paint abstractly or representationally depending on their interests. By beginning a work in one way and ending it in some other each painter finds an elusive balance with their work. Their strength is in choosing to cast off whatever notion of a particular way or current trend. They observe the language of painting on their ain terms. Pioneering new ground, mixing genres, and orchestrating a unique approach which doesn't leave them beholden to anyone.
Past shifting their approach and style at volition these vi artists share a historical thread with others who came before them. Namely, Elaine de Kooning, Sonia Gechtoff, Buffie Johnson, Deborah Remington, Jeanne Reynal, and Susan Rothenberg, each of whom charted these in-between spaces and pushed boundaries to find their ain success.
It's within this space that Liz Ainslie, Theresa Daddezio, Alison Trick, Ilse Sørensen Murdock, Kristina Lee, and Erika Ranee unapologetically question in their own fashion where painting comes from, who it belongs to, and where it is headed. Each attributing to a dialogue that looks to move the chat forrad through their own space and in their ain fourth dimension.
